Are real estate agents on the site?▾

Real estate agents and brokerages are listed in the Business Directory under Real Estate and on the Agents page. Agents can claim their listing and add their contact details. Property listings show whether the seller is an owner or an agent.

How do I find out which school my child is assigned to?▾

Which school a child attends is decided by the school district, usually from the home address. Attendance zones are set by each district and can change. We found no current statewide public list of them, so Smith Lake NOW does not show them and never says that an address is assigned to a school because the school is nearby.

To find out:

  1. Find the district. Around the lake there are county systems and city systems (for example Winston County Schools and Haleyville City Schools in Winston County). The Schools & Education page lists the districts by county and each district page shows its office phone number and website, as listed in the Alabama State Department of Education directory.
  2. Contact the district office or look on its website for enrollment and boundary information. Ask which school serves the exact address, and whether that can change.
  3. Ask the district what it needs to enroll a student, and by when.
  4. Do this before you sign a contract on a home, and ask again if you are buying a lot or a new build.

On a property listing, the "Schools and districts" section names the public school systems that have published schools in the listing's town. That is a list of systems, not a statement of which school the home is zoned for.

How do I read a school's state letter grade and index scores?▾

Alabama gives each school a state accountability letter grade from its total points earned: A is 90-100, B is 80-89, C is 70-79, D is 60-69 and F is 0-59. A school may instead show ID (insufficient data) or AW (approved waiver) in the state's files. Those are not grades, and Smith Lake NOW does not publish a school profile unless the state has published a letter grade for that school.

What to know when you read a profile on Schools & Education:

  • Every number is shown with its reporting year. The grades on the site are for the 2024-25 school year, published by the Alabama State Department of Education in November 2025.
  • Academic achievement and academic growth are index scores used in the state's formula. They are not the percent of students who are proficient.
  • Graduation rate and college and career readiness are percents of a graduating cohort, and the state reports them one year behind the other indicators.
  • Chronic absenteeism is the percent of students absent 18 or more days. A lower percent is better.
  • If the state published no number for a school, the page says "not available". A missing number is never shown as zero.
  • The site does not rank schools and does not use rating websites.

Each profile links to the official workbook the numbers come from and shows the date they were retrieved.

Where do I enroll my child in a school near Smith Lake?▾

Smith Lake NOW does not enroll students. Enrollment and registration are handled by the school district, and the district decides which school a student attends.

  1. Open the Schools & Education page and choose the district for the area where you will live. Each district page lists the office address, phone number and website.
  2. Call the district office or use its website to ask how to register a new student and what it needs from you.
  3. Ask which school serves your address. The directory does not show this.
  4. If you are moving from out of state or have a student with special needs, ask the district office what it can do to help before you arrive.

If a number or link on a district page looks wrong, tell us through the Contact page and we will check it against the official directory.

Which school systems are around Smith Lake?▾

The counties around Lewis Smith Lake are served by both county and city school systems:

  • Winston County: Winston County Schools (schools in Addison, Arley, Double Springs and Lynn) and Haleyville City Schools.
  • Cullman County: Cullman County Schools and Cullman City Schools.
  • Walker County: Walker County Schools and Jasper City Schools.

A school with a town's name in its address can belong to a county system: for example the schools with a Bremen address are operated by Cullman County Schools. The district page on Schools & Education lists each system's published schools.

The Schools & Education page lists only the school systems whose schools have been checked and published so far. A school system appears under every county where it has a published school. A county is where a school building stands; it does not tell you which homes the school serves. To learn that, contact the district.

What does the Schools directory show, and what does it not show?▾

The Schools & Education directory is built from official sources: the Alabama State Department of Education directory and state accountability reports, and the federal Common Core of Data. A school or district is published only after it has been checked.

It shows:

  • the school's name, type, grades, address, website and district;
  • a phone number only when two official sources agree. When the sources disagree, the page gives the district office number instead and, for some schools, also lists each number with who lists it;
  • the state letter grade and indicator scores with the reporting year and a link to the source, and enrollment when it has been verified;
  • programs, sports and achievements only when an official school or district page states them, with that page and the date it was read;
  • the date the school was last verified.

It does not show:

  • which school an address is assigned to (attendance zones are set by the district and can change, and we found no current statewide public list of them);
  • rankings, ratings, or anything from rating websites;
  • any information about individual students.

When something is missing, the page says "not available".
