How do I find out which school my child is assigned to?
Which school a child attends is decided by the school district, usually from the home address. Attendance zones are set by each district and can change. We found no current statewide public list of them, so Smith Lake NOW does not show them and never says that an address is assigned to a school because the school is nearby.
To find out:
- Find the district. Around the lake there are county systems and city systems (for example Winston County Schools and Haleyville City Schools in Winston County). The Schools & Education page lists the districts by county and each district page shows its office phone number and website, as listed in the Alabama State Department of Education directory.
- Contact the district office or look on its website for enrollment and boundary information. Ask which school serves the exact address, and whether that can change.
- Ask the district what it needs to enroll a student, and by when.
- Do this before you sign a contract on a home, and ask again if you are buying a lot or a new build.
On a property listing, the "Schools and districts" section names the public school systems that have published schools in the listing's town. That is a list of systems, not a statement of which school the home is zoned for.
