Building or fixing up a place on Smith Lake is a different kind of shopping trip. The lumber yard may be 40 minutes from your cove, the driveway may be steep and gravel, and the shoreline has its own rule book. Knowing which store is where, and which questions to ask before the truck leaves the yard, saves time and money.
This guide lists building-supply stores we could confirm in and around Cullman, Jasper, Haleyville, Addison, Hanceville, Hartselle and Decatur. It then covers delivery to lake lots, the permits that come before you buy shoreline materials, septic and county permits, how to build a materials list, and how the three lake counties differ.
How we built this list
- A store appears here only if we confirmed that specific location on the company's own website or store locator on October 24, 2026. A company having stores "in the area" was not enough.
- Businesses with a Smith Lake NOW profile link to it. A Verified badge means our team compared the listing's facts with the business's own sources. It is not an endorsement or a quality rating.
- We quote store hours only where the company's own site listed them, and we give the date. Hours change, so confirm before you drive.
- We could not confirm a store in every town. Where a town has no entry, we say so rather than fill the gap.

Two things in that table surprise people. First, The Home Depot's own Cullman page shows no store in Cullman; the nearest it lists are Jasper (about 27 miles) and Decatur (about 29 miles). Cullman's big-box option is Lowe's. Second, Lowe's own Alabama store directory lists stores in Cullman, Hartselle, Decatur and Guntersville but none in Jasper, Haleyville or Double Springs. We did not confirm a national-chain home center in Double Springs or Arley.
Local lumber yards and independent hardware
Local yards are where many lake builders start, because they often know the local framing, siding and dock-hardware needs. We confirmed three on their own sites:
- Powell Building Supply in Addison describes itself as a full-service lumber yard with a hardware store, serving the area since 1968. Its site listed Monday through Friday 5:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday 5:30 a.m. to noon, closed Sunday (as posted October 24, 2026; the page carries no date). It shows a "We Deliver" banner but gives no delivery area, fees or terms, so ask. See the Powell Building Supply profile.
- Buettner Brothers Lumber Company in Cullman lists lumber and building materials, custom millwork and custom engineered wood trusses. Its site listed Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed weekends (copyright 2023). It does not say whether it delivers or sells to the public, and its footer identifies it as "An SBSI Company" (part of a larger group).
- Elliott True Value in Haleyville is listed on True Value's own store locator with hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday (checked October 24, 2026).
Our retail category and home improvement category show more local businesses as they are verified.
Home centers and the big chains
For one-stop shopping on fixtures, flooring, appliances, tools and paint, the chains above are the practical choice. The Home Depot in Jasper lists a Pro Desk, which is the place to ask about contractor pricing, special orders and delivery scheduling; ask Lowe's whether its Cullman store has one. Lowe's Cullman page lists installation services. The Home Depot in Jasper lists a rental center for tools and equipment.
Ace Hardware stores are independently owned, according to Ace's own store pages. The Curry store in Jasper lists marine and dock supplies among its departments, which makes it a useful stop for dock hardware and small repairs. The Dodge City store in Hanceville lists a "Smith Lake gifts" department alongside plumbing and electrical.
Plumbing, electrical, concrete, flooring and rentals
- Plumbing and electrical parts: The home centers and hardware stores above cover most repair needs. We did not confirm a dedicated plumbing or electrical supply house in these towns, so we do not name one. Licensed plumbers and electricians often buy through their own accounts; see the guide to finding local contractors.
- Ready-mix concrete: We could not confirm a ready-mix supplier from an official source, so we do not name one. Concrete is ordered by the cubic yard and delivered in a heavy truck, and a steep driveway can change how it has to be placed. Ask any supplier how the truck will reach your pour and who is responsible if it cannot.
- Flooring and appliances: Lowe's and The Home Depot are the confirmed options. Lowe's lists installation services for floors, windows and fences on its Cullman page.
- Equipment and truck rental: The Home Depot in Jasper lists a rental center for tools, large equipment and moving trucks. For heavy equipment such as an excavator, ask a contractor who already owns or rents one.
What to buy where
A rough way to divide a project:
- Framing, sheathing, trusses and millwork: Start at a lumber yard such as Powell or Buettner Brothers, where you can ask for a written quote on the whole package.
- Fasteners, small tools, hoses and dock hardware: An Ace or True Value store saves a trip to a large store.
- Fixtures, flooring, cabinets and appliances: The home centers, ordered early because special orders take time.
- Fencing, gates, gravel-driveway tools and trailer gear: Tractor Supply.
- Occasional-use tools: Harbor Freight, or rent.
Delivery to lake lots and steep driveways
Do not assume a delivery is simple just because a store advertises it. Lake lots often mean a narrow county road, a steep gravel drive and a tight turnaround. Before you order, ask:
- What size truck will make the delivery, and can it get to the lot?
- Where will materials be dropped, and who unloads them?
- Is there a minimum order, a delivery fee or a mileage charge, and does it change for steep or gravel drives?
- What happens if the driver decides the drive is too steep or too soft after rain?
- Can the order be staged at the top of the drive, or at a flat spot on the road with a clear place to leave it?
Send the supplier your address, a photo of the drive and the grade if you know it. Ask the same questions when you hire a contractor, because the person who supplies your project may also be the one hauling it. For waterfront lots, the steep bank between the house and the shoreline is a separate planning question; ask a dock or shoreline contractor about barge or hand-carry access.
Before you buy shoreline materials: Alabama Power's rules
Alabama Power owns the Smith Lake pool properties and holds additional rights along the shoreline, and the company's Smith Lake shoreline permitting guidelines (revised December 2021) say a written permit and a visible pending permit tag are required before construction or repair on that land. Verbal approval is not enough, and Alabama Power does not issue permits to a property owner's contractors.
Those guidelines treat piers, boat docks, decks, stairs, boathouses, ramps, dredging, seawalls and rip rap as shoreline construction. Some points that affect what you buy:
- Seawalls: Rip rap and natural bank stabilization are preferred; seawalls are evaluated case by case. Backfill source and type need approval, and no new creosote products may be used.
- Floating structures: Flotation must be encased or closed-cell polystyrene made for marine use. Roofed structures must stay open (with a limited allowance for a storage area), and non-reflective materials are required.
- Dredging: It needs Alabama Power approval before any material is removed.
- Fees: The December 2021 guidelines list a $400 non-refundable general construction fee for new work and a $600 fee for unauthorized construction. Confirm current amounts.
- Timing: Alabama Power's permits page recommends working during a lake drawdown, when more lakebed is accessible. Smith Lake is lowered each year from July 1 to November 30.
Buy shoreline materials after the permit is approved, not before. The official starting point is Alabama Power Shorelines. For levels and timing, see Understanding Smith Lake water levels.
Septic and county permits
If your lot is not on public sewer, a septic system needs a Permit to Install from your county health department before construction starts. Alabama Department of Public Health says to submit the application and plans to the county health department and begin building only after the permit is issued. Installers must be licensed by the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board. Read the department's pre-construction page and find your county office in its locations list.
Building permits depend on where the lot sits:
- Inside the City of Cullman: The city's Building Inspections department issues permits for building, plumbing, HVAC, electrical and signs within the city limits.
- Elsewhere: Ask the county commission and the town or city hall whether your address needs a building permit. We could not confirm a county building-permit program for the unincorporated parts of the lake counties from an official source.
Before any digging, contact Alabama 811 (call 811). The Alabama Public Service Commission urges homeowners to contact 811 at least two days ahead so utilities can mark lines, and calls the service free.
The three counties compared
- Lake towns — Cullman County: Cullman, Crane Hill, Bremen, Hanceville; Walker County: Jasper, Curry; Winston County: Double Springs, Arley, Addison, Haleyville
- Septic permits — Cullman County: County health department, 601 Logan Ave. SW, Cullman, lists Environmental Services; Walker County: County health department, 705 20th Ave. E., Jasper; Winston County: County health department, 110 Legion Rd., Double Springs
- Building permits — Cullman County: City of Cullman Building Inspections inside city limits; Walker County: Ask the county commission and your town hall; Winston County: The county's website lists no building-inspection office; ask the commission office
- Stores we confirmed — Cullman County: Lowe's, Tractor Supply, Harbor Freight, Buettner Brothers, Dodge City Ace; Walker County: The Home Depot, Ace, Tractor Supply, Harbor Freight; Winston County: Powell Building Supply, Elliott True Value, Tractor Supply
Going by the stores we confirmed, the Winston County side leans on independent yards and a hardware store, the Walker County side on Jasper's home center and Ace, and the Cullman County side on Lowe's and Cullman's yards. Drive times to the larger stores can be long, so group your purchases into fewer trips.
How to build a materials list
- Start from drawings or a measured sketch. List every item by room or phase: foundation, framing, roof, exterior, interior, mechanical, finishes.
- Count, then add a waste allowance. Ask the supplier what allowance is normal for each product.
- Confirm sizes and ratings. Ask whether each product is rated for ground contact or wet exposure where it applies, especially near the water.
- Group by delivery stage. Footings and framing arrive before trim and cabinets. Staging helps on small lots.
- Get at least two written quotes. Ask how long prices are held, what delivery costs, and what the return policy is.
- Hold shoreline items until your Alabama Power permit is in hand.
- Share the list with your contractor. It can catch missing items before they cost a day on site.
