Smith Lake is a place people plan around the water and then discover is about much more: a national forest with a federally designated wilderness beside its western arms, a county park with festivals and a pool on the east, small-town barbecue, a canyon where, its website says, tiny creatures glow after dark, and a lake that is deep enough to stay interesting in every season. This guide is a trip planner. It covers how to get here, where to stay, where to eat, what to do, how the season and the lake level shape your plans, and what to know about safety and emergencies.

Throughout, we separate three kinds of facts. Official sources (Forest Service, Cullman County, Alabama Power, the state) are named and linked. Information from a business is worded as "according to the business's website," with the date we read it, October 25, 2026. And anything that changes day to day, such as hours, rates, lake level and closures, is left for you to check at the source before you go.

Getting here

Smith Lake is about 35 miles long, so "getting there" depends on which end you want. The east side near Cullman is the easy end to reach from Interstate 65. The west and north side, near Double Springs, Arley and the national forest, takes more back roads. Jasper sits near the dam at the south end.

Cullman County's own directions for Smith Lake Park say to take I-65 exit 305, turn west on County Road 222 and follow it about 6 miles to a four-way stop, then turn south and look for the park sign. The park advertises that it is within 7 miles of I-65. The Forest Service describes Clear Creek Recreation Area as about 13 miles north of Jasper.

The table gives rough straight-line distances, which are always shorter than road distances. We computed them from published city-center coordinates and from the coordinates the county and the Forest Service list for the park and recreation area, rounded to the nearest mile.

  • Smith Lake Park (east side) — Birmingham: about 40 miles; Huntsville: about 48 miles; Cullman: about 8 miles; Jasper: about 24 miles
  • Clear Creek Recreation Area (west and south side) — Birmingham: about 43 miles; Huntsville: about 62 miles; Cullman: about 25 miles; Jasper: about 11 miles

Roads wind, lake arms cut across routes, and drive times vary with traffic and construction, so we don't promise any. Use a mapping app on the day, and for the west side give yourself extra time. Several businesses publish their own drive times from the interstate or from the cities; they are their estimates, so confirm with the business.

Where to stay

Smith Lake NOW keeps vacation rentals (cabins and houses) on the Vacation Rentals page and watercraft rentals (pontoons, jet skis) on the Rentals page. They are separate on purpose. Campgrounds, lodges and property managers are in the Business Directory, under rentals and property management.

Public and federal campgrounds

  • Smith Lake Park (Cullman County). The county says it offers year-round camping, with cabins, full-service camper sites, water-and-electric sites, tent sites with electricity, pavilions, playgrounds, a pool, a fishing pier and a six-lane boat launch. Reservations are online through the county. The county's price list sets minimum ages to book, a two-night cabin minimum, and rules such as no fireworks, no alcoholic beverages and no pets in cabins. Read the current price list before you book. Park page: Cullman County Parks.
  • Clear Creek Recreation Area (Forest Service, Winston County). Four paved campground loops with 102 RV sites that have water and electric hookups, two group tent areas, a swimming beach and a picnic area. Camping is by reservation only through Recreation.gov, and the Forest Service lists a March-to-October season of use. Its published 2026 fee schedule lists single and double site rates; confirm current prices when you book.
  • Corinth Recreation Area (Forest Service, Winston County). Fifty-two sites with water, electric and sewer hookups and eight rustic tent sites, a swimming beach, a picnic area and a shoreline path. Same March-to-October season and Recreation.gov booking.
  • Houston Recreation Area. The Forest Service lists day use, a swim beach and a boat ramp; its campground is closed to the public.

Lodges, cabins and campgrounds in our directory

All of these are verified in the directory. Details come from each business's website, read on October 25, 2026.

  • Lakeshore Inn, Restaurant and Marina in Double Springs describes itself as a waterfront hotel with 34 rooms, a restaurant and a marina, and says it is near the Bankhead National Forest.
  • The Snowbird House in Crane Hill is a lake house rental that its website says sleeps 16 and has a dock with a boat slip.
  • Smith Lake Glamping in Crane Hill lists vintage Airstream stays and a loft on its website.
  • Brushy Creek Campground in Crane Hill says on its website that it is a quiet campground close to Smith Lake Park, with short-term and long-term options.
  • Speegle's RV Park and Campground in Crane Hill offers RV sites, covered boat storage and a ramp for guests.
  • Smith Lake Rentals and Sales in Arley links to a Smith Lake rentals site and a vacation rental management page from its real estate sales site.
  • Duncan Bridge Marina in Arley lists an RV park near the marina.
  • Another RV park in the directory, Unhitched Arrowhead RV Park, is listed in our directory, details not yet verified.

When you book a lake house, ask about the dock and slip, how deep the water is at the dock at the time of year you're visiting, whether linens and a boat are included, and what the rental's rules are for parties and noise. The help article on finding a vacation rental explains how our listings work.

Where to eat

Our restaurants on and around Smith Lake guide has the longer rundown, and the Restaurants page and restaurants category list everything in the directory. A few verified places to start, with details from each website as of October 25, 2026:

  • Lakeshore Inn, Restaurant and Marina, Double Springs, lists a restaurant and an attached bar and grill (Goldiggers Bar & Grill).
  • The Grille at Trident Marina, Crane Hill, is the restaurant at Trident Marina, and its website lists separate marina and grille hours.
  • EG's BBQ, Bremen, lists brisket, pulled pork, chicken and ribs on its website.
  • Smokin' Pig BBQ, Double Springs, lists smoked barbecue, ribs and smoked chicken on its website.

Many local places keep limited days or seasonal hours, and some post them only on social media. Call before you drive out, especially in the off-season.

What to do

On the water

You can rent a pontoon, a personal watercraft or a kayak, take a captained cruise, or hire a fishing guide. See marinas, fuel and boat services and watercraft rentals. If you are bringing your own boat, read boat ramps and public access first. For fishing, Smith Lake Fishing Adventures says on its website that it runs guided striped bass trips year round; see all fishing guides. Anyone 16 or older who is not an Alabama resident, and Alabama residents aged 16 to 64, need a fishing license, and Lewis Smith has its own bass and striped bass rules, so check the state's page before you fish.

Swimming and beaches

The Forest Service lists swimming beaches at Clear Creek, Corinth and Houston. Day-use fees apply: its 2026 fee schedule lists day-use charges at each, and Houston's day use is seasonal. Cullman County's Smith Lake Park lists a public beach and a seasonal pool, and general park admission is free according to the county's price list. Wear a life jacket on the water, and keep children close.

Hiking in the Bankhead National Forest

The William B. Bankhead National Forest covers about 182,000 acres, and the Sipsey Wilderness is its federally designated wilderness area. Forest Service rules in that wilderness include a seven-day camping limit, groups no larger than ten and no fireworks, and no motorized or mechanized equipment, including bicycles. Near the lake, Clear Creek has a 2.5-mile paved Raven Cliffs trail and Corinth has a 1.25-mile shoreline path. Read the Forest Service's wilderness page, recreation page and current conditions before you go. Know that the forest is open to hunting in season, and that controlled burns take place from winter through spring, so check alerts.

Dismals Canyon

Dismals Canyon is a privately owned 85-acre canyon in northwest Alabama, roughly 35 to 50 miles in a straight line from the lake sites above (our own estimate; the drive is longer). According to its website it is not a state or national park but was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1975, has a 1.5-mile hiking trail on the canyon floor, and offers guided night tours to see the bioluminescent "Dismalites." The website says the trail is natural terrain with limited bridges and fallen trees. Hours, rates and tour schedules change by season, so use its website. Plan for the drive.

Cullman and the east side

Visit Cullman, the tourism bureau, lists Smith Lake attractions, including Smith Lake Park, a zipline operation and boat rentals. In Cullman itself, the Ave Maria Grotto has drawn visitors since 1934 to see the miniature structures of Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk, according to its website; the park is four acres. Cullman County Parks also lists Clarkson Covered Bridge and Sportsman Lake Park. Smith Lake Park holds special events and festivals throughout the year, and vendor forms on the county site mention a Memorial Day festival, a Fourth of July festival and a Sweet Tater Festival. See what is on in our events calendar.

Shopping and supplies

Several marinas in our directory list a ship store, snack counter or small store on their websites. For building and home projects, see where to buy building supplies near Smith Lake. The Marketplace lists boats, gear and household items from local sellers.

Seasons and lake level

Smith Lake is a working reservoir. Alabama Power says it begins lowering on July 1 and ends lowering on November 30, and in a 2021 notice it described a drop from about 510 feet toward about 496 feet by mid-November, subject to weather. Our water levels guide explains what that means on the shoreline.

For a visitor:

  • Late spring through early fall is the busy season. Smith Lake Park's peak is listed as May 1 to September 30, its pool season is listed as Memorial Day to Labor Day (the park's page also posts a notice about weekend-only pool hours, so check), and the Forest Service campgrounds run from March through October.
  • Fall brings lower water, so check ramp and dock depth. Cooler weather suits hiking and fishing.
  • Winter is quiet. Some businesses cut their hours, and national forest campgrounds are closed for the season, though boat ramps are listed as open all year. Prescribed burns and hunting seasons affect the forest.
  • Always check the live Lake page before you plan a launch or a dock stay.

Safety

  • Life jackets. Children under 8 must wear one at all times on a boat, and everyone on a personal watercraft or being towed must wear one. Alabama law also requires life jackets for everyone aboard within 800 feet below a hydroelectric dam.
  • Don't drink and drive a boat. The legal limit is 0.08 percent blood alcohol, and impairment by drugs counts too.
  • Heat. Alabama Power's recreation brochure advises drinking more fluids, avoiding alcohol and sugary drinks, using sunscreen and wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Weather. Check the forecast and official alerts. See what the Lake page shows about official alerts.
  • Dams. Stay away from the powerhouse intakes and the tailrace below Smith Dam, where Alabama Power warns of strong currents and rapidly rising water.
  • Leave no trace. Alabama Power asks visitors to carry out what they carry in.

Emergency basics

Call 911 first, on the water or on land. Smith Lake NOW, lake alerts and Pontoon Pete are not emergency services. After everyone is safe, a lake alert can warn others about a hazard. For hospitals and urgent care, see Smith Lake hospitals and emergency resources and the help article on emergencies. For non-emergency boating questions, ALEA Marine Patrol's Northern District office, which covers Lewis Smith Lake, lists a phone number on its contact page. Before you head into the forest or onto the water, tell someone your plans; Alabama Power's safe boating article recommends filing a float plan with someone onshore.
