Smith Lake is long and branching: Alabama Power lists it as 35 miles long, with shoreline figures in published sources ranging from "more than 500" to 713 miles (see Understanding Smith Lake Water Levels for why we do not pick one). It sits in three counties, and where you buy decides your drive, your county offices and what the shoreline in front of you is like. This guide covers geography and how Smith Lake NOW is organized. It does not rate neighborhoods, schools or agents. Facts were read from the sources named on October 24, 2026.

The three counties

FERC's Federal Register notice on the dam's relicensing names the counties as Cullman, Walker and Winston. The Alabama Secretary of State's city and county lookup places these lake-area towns:

  • Cullman County: Bremen and Crane Hill. Cullman County's courthouse and revenue commissioner's office are in the city of Cullman.
  • Winston County: Arley, Double Springs (the county seat) and Houston. The Encyclopedia of Alabama places Arley within a mile of Lewis Smith Lake, notes most of the town lies within the William B. Bankhead National Forest, and puts Double Springs about four miles from the lake and also within the national forest. If you are looking near the forest, ask which surrounding land is public.
  • Walker County: Jasper, the county seat. The U.S. Geological Survey names its station at the dam "Sipsey Fork at Lewis Smith Dam near Jasper", and Alabama Power's Shoreline Management office for the lake is on Curry Highway in Jasper. Jasper itself is a city, not a lakefront community.

Each county runs its own revenue office, probate office and permits, so the county line matters for more than the mailing address. Your deed shows the county; Owning a Smith Lake home explains the tax side and links the three revenue offices.

Lake areas on Smith Lake NOW

Smith Lake NOW organizes the lake into 21 areas, including places (Arley, Bremen, Crane Hill, Double Springs, Houston, Jasper, Logan), the dam area and Smith Lake Park, and several creek and arm names such as Ryan Creek, Rock Creek, Sipsey Fork, Clear Creek, Brushy Creek, Simpson Creek and Crooked Creek. These are our labels for browsing, not municipal boundaries, so confirm the county of any parcel. Open any area from the communities index, or go straight to its real estate page: Arley, Bremen, Crane Hill, Double Springs, Houston, Jasper and the Cullman side. Each shows the active listings placed there. Listings state their lake area as the seller entered it, so confirm the location with the seller or agent; exact addresses are shared only when the seller allows it.

Main channel or creek arm?

Open main-channel water and narrow creek arms feel different, and their depth at the dock can differ too. We have no official data on depth by arm, so do not assume. Whatever the location, the useful comparison is how much water is at the end of the dock at the 496-foot winter pool, not at the 510-foot summer pool; the lake normally falls about 14 feet between July and December. Our water levels guide explains the schedule and how to read the live gauge on the Lake page.

Comparing places

Open a community page to see the businesses, rentals, events and posts for that area, then compare what is for sale against the marinas, restaurants and contractors nearby. Use the filters on all properties for waterfront, dock and year-round water, and read Buying Waterfront Property on Smith Lake before you make an offer. Waterfront homes are collected on the waterfront homes page.
