Families who move to Lewis Smith Lake full time usually ask the same three questions: which school system covers the area, how good the schools are, and which school a particular house is assigned to. This guide answers what the official sources can answer and says plainly what they cannot.

Who runs the schools

The lake touches Winston, Cullman and Walker counties. Each county has a county school system, and some towns also have a city system:

The town in a school's address does not always match the school system that runs it. The schools with a Bremen address, for example, are operated by Cullman County Schools. The Schools & Education page lists, by county, the school systems whose schools have been checked and published so far.

Which school will my child attend?

Only the school district can answer this. Attendance zones are set by each district and can change. We found no current statewide public list of them, so no website can tell you from an address alone. Being close to a school does not mean a home is assigned to it. Before you commit to a home, call the district office, give the exact address, and ask which school serves it and how to enroll. Each district page on this site lists the office phone number and website exactly as the Alabama State Department of Education directory lists them.

The "Schools and districts" section on a property listing names the school systems that have published schools in the listing's town. It is a list of systems, not a statement of which school the home is zoned for.

How to read the state letter grade

Alabama gives each school a state accountability letter grade from its total points earned: A is 90-100, B is 80-89, C is 70-79, D is 60-69 and F is 0-59. Some schools show ID (insufficient data) or AW (approved waiver) instead, which are not grades. As of October 2026, the most recent published grades are for the 2024-25 school year.

The indicator scores behind the grade need careful reading:

  • Academic achievement and academic growth are index scores used in the state formula. They are not the percent of students who are proficient.
  • Graduation rate and college and career readiness are percents of a graduating cohort, reported one year behind the other indicators.
  • Chronic absenteeism is the percent of students absent 18 or more days. Lower is better.

For example, the state's overall grade for 2024-25 is 87 points (B), and Winston County Schools earned 90 points (A). A school profile on this site shows each number with its year and a link to the official workbook.

What this site does not do

It does not rank schools, and it does not use rating websites. It shows programs, sports and achievements only when an official school or district page states them. It shows a school phone number only when two official sources agree. When they do not, it gives the district office number instead and, for some schools, also lists each number with who lists it.

A short checklist before you move

  1. Choose the district for the address you are considering and open its page on Schools & Education.
  2. Call the district office and ask which school serves the address and what enrollment requires.
  3. Read the school's state report card on its profile, and note the reporting year.
  4. Visit the school's own website and ask the school about the programs your child needs.
  5. Ask again if you are buying a lot or a new build, because zones can change.
